POLK COUNTY—On Wednesday afternoon, fire departments were called to the scene of a brushfire in the Green River Cove area. As of 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, the fire had burned an estimated 200 acres and was 0% contained, according to the N.C. Forest Service.

The Black Cove Fire started on Green River Cove Rd. at approximately 2 p.m. due to a downed power line and was burning towards the Big Hungry area. No structures have been lost.

A volunteer evacuation was in effect for residents of Scarlett Mountain Rd.

The N.C. Forest Service was on scene conducting operations with approximately 70 firefighters on the ground and multiple agencies assisting.

“Fire departments from Polk, Rutherford and Henderson counties have crews on the ground,” said Polk Fire Marshal Bobby Arledge in the initial message to the public regarding the fire. “Please avoid the area while crews are working.”

Saluda Fire and Rescue said in a social media post that crews were also on the scene of a second fire off Deep Woods Ln. Located in the Piney Mountain Community off Holbert Cove Rd., officials say the Deep Woods Fire had burned approximately 50 acres and was 0% contained as of Thursday. Several structures were threatened by the blaze.

The fires come on the heels of a wildfire that burned 619 acres earlier this month near Tryon and Saluda, and warnings from officials that conditions in the area put the region at a high risk for fire danger.

The Tryon Daily Bulletin will provide more details as they become available.
