COLUMBUS—The Polk County Board of Commissioners meeting held on Monday, June 16, was highlighted by a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the county zoning ordinance and the approval of the 2025/2026 budget.
The public hearing was held on an amendment that would have changed the Hunting Country area’s zoning from Residential Estate Five (RE-5) to permit short-term vacation rentals.
However, the change to the ordinance was not approved during the regular meeting, with commissioners voting 4-1 to deny the amendment. Commissioner Jennifer Hargett voted against denying it, noting that while she didn’t support the amendment, she felt it needed more clarification.
The hearing drew significant attention from residents, many of whom expressed strong opposition, citing concerns about preserving the area’s rural character and the potential negative impacts of increased commercial activity.
The Board then voted to approve the budget for the fiscal year 2025/2026, along with a pair of amendments, on the recommendation of County Manager Marche Pittman. A budget work session was held on May 19, followed by a public hearing on June 2, during which residents had the opportunity to voice their opinions.
Pittman announced a reduction in the tax rate to .4277, a lower rate than previously proposed. Additionally, two budget amendments were proposed and approved beforehand: an increase of $20,000 in funding for 911 communication contracted services and an adjustment in the fund balance allocation. The entire budget packet can be viewed online at polknc.gov.
After a brief discussion, the commissioners unanimously supported these amendments and approved the 2025/26 budget as a whole.
The meeting also included Melissa O’Loughlin’s reappointment as the county tax administrator for an additional four-year term, and the Board expressed appreciation for her dedication and hard work.
The next Board of Commissioners meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday, July 21, at the Bryant A. Womack Building.
