Bernard MacMahon, Allison McGourty to visit for “Becoming Led Zeppelin”
TRYON—The Tryon Theatre will host a special screening of Becoming Led Zeppelin on April 2, featuring an appearance by the film’s creators, Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty.
The highly anticipated documentary, which debuted to record-breaking box office numbers earlier this year, chronicles the origins and rise of Led Zeppelin through rare archival footage, in-depth interviews and an immersive cinematic approach.
Tryon Theatre owner Scott Lane expressed excitement about the event.
“We’re absolutely chuffed to have Bernard and Allison back at the Tryon Theatre,” Lane said. “Their latest, Becoming Led Zeppelin, is breaking box office records everywhere. It’ll be fun to hear some of their stories about putting together this groundbreaking documentary.”
The screening will begin at 7:15 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with MacMahon and McGourty. The film will have an extended run at the Tryon Theatre, with additional showings to be announced.
MacMahon and McGourty’s return to Tryon carries special significance. Nearly a decade ago, Kirk Gollwitzer, co-founder of the Tryon International Film Festival, successfully sourced their documentary series American Epic, bringing them to Tryon on two separate occasions. Their early visits helped forge a lasting connection between the filmmakers and the community.
“Having Bernard and Allison return to Tryon feels like a homecoming,” said Beau Menetre, who helped facilitate their visits. “From their first screening of American Epic in 2016 to their return as TRIFF judges in 2018, and now coming full circle with the historic success of Becoming Led Zeppelin, we are honored to welcome them back to our little town for this special event.”
“I was so excited to hear from Allison about her desire to come to Tryon,” Gollwitzer added. “Both Beau and I remember when they first mentioned the Led Zeppelin project, which was extremely confidential at the time. I initially tried to source the film for an earlier festival, but it was too difficult to pull off. I remember them saying it felt like they were holding a lion by its tail! Also, thanks to Scott and Gayle Lane for being the catalysts for this exciting event, and to Evan Fitch for his operational coordination as well.”
Planned events at local establishments, most notably The Fitzgerald, will accompany the evening’s screening, with further details to be announced by the venues.
