COLUMBUS—The Polk County Cooperative Extension office will host a free “Matter of Balance” class at 79 Carmel Lane, in the building behind the Senior’s Meeting Place. The program aims to help older adults address their fears of falls while promoting increased activity levels. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning March 26 and continuing through May 14.
Many older adults grapple with the fear of falling, so they limit their activities. To combat this issue, this award-winning program provides practical strategies to manage falls and encourage active lifestyles among seniors.
Participants in the program will learn to reframe their perspectives on falls, viewing them as manageable and controllable events. Through this shift in mindset, they can set personal goals for increased activity, implement small changes around their homes to diminish fall risks, and engage in exercises that bolster strength and balance.
The program includes group discussions, problem-solving sessions, role-playing, exercise training, assertiveness training, and manageable homework assignments. Key highlights of the program involve understanding the importance of exercise as a preventive measure against falls, practicing exercises that enhance coordination and strength, and conducting home safety evaluations to ensure a secure living environment.
Participants will also develop personal action plans to help maintain motivation and encourage an active lifestyle.
This event is suited for anyone concerned about falls, including individuals who wish to enhance their balance, flexibility, and strength. It is particularly beneficial for those who have experienced falls and seniors who may have limited their activities due to fear of falling.
