Noah Harden delivered a solid pitching performance Tuesday, helping Polk County notch a 6-1 victory over Mitchell at The Bottoms.
Harden frustrated Mitchell batters throughout his six-inning stint, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. Aaden Denton worked the final inning, allowing Mitchell’s lone run.
The Wolverines (3-1) wasted no time in taking control, scoring twice in the first inning. Gunnar Alm opened with a walk before Jayce Edwards followed with a single. After a stolen base put both runners in scoring position, Alm raced home on a wild pitch for the game’s first run. Edwards later scored on a double steal to give Polk County a 2-0 advantage.
Polk County added to its lead in the second inning when Zalen McCraw reached on an error with one out. With two outs, Alm drew a walk and Edwards was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Avrey Hensley then got plunked by a pitch, forcing in McCraw to make it 3-0.
The Wolverines extended their lead in the fifth inning. Alex Perry reached on an error with one out, and McCraw and Matt Jarrett both walked with two outs to load the bases. An error on Alm’s grounder allowed Perry and McCraw to score, with Jarrett later crossing the plate on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-0.
Mitchell managed to avoid the shutout with a run in the seventh against Denton.
Edwards finished 1-for-3 with three stolen bases to lead Polk County’s offense, while McCraw went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Nate Fagan added a 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
The win improves Polk County to 3-1 on the season while Mitchell falls to 0-1.
The Wolverines will open Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play next Tuesday, traveling to R-S Central.
