TRYON—Tryon Little Theater’s big season musical, “Gypsy: A Musical Fable,” recenlty opened at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and will run for its second weekend, March 7 – 9.
“Gypsy” is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with “the ultimate show business mother.” Ethel Merman was the voice most associated with the role of Mama Rose, determined to make her daughters stars of the vaudeville circuit and living vicariously through them —chasing the stardom she had desperately wanted for herself.
The lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, with music by Jule Styne, and the book by Arthur Laurents. The production of “Gypsey” is directed by Laura Depta Peal with musical director Pam McNeil.
Tickets for “Gypsy” are available online at www.tltinfo.org, or by calling 828-859-2466.
