‘Guns N’ Hoses’ benefits the Tryon Fire Alliance

TRYON—On Friday, February 28, downtown Tryon was alive with spice and camaraderie as the 2nd annual Tryon Chili Cookoff, affectionately dubbed “Guns N’ Hoses,” kicked off the Tryon Downtown Development Association’s 4th Friday events for the year. This signature chili cookoff benefits the Tryon Fire Alliance and brings together local chefs, residents, and visitors for a day filled with fun, food, and friendly competition.

The event stemmed from an idea by Steven Siler, the Communication Officer for the Tryon Fire Department, who aptly named based on its connection to firefighters and police officers and referencing the iconic band, capturing the spirit of the community and the charitable cause.

“We’re thrilled to see more competitors this year, along with so many people who came out in support of the Tryon Fire Alliance and to enjoy some incredible chili,” Siler said, while serving his own “Come Hell or High Water” vegan chili from his booth in front of Carrie Bass Studio.

The day began at the Plaza, where attendees could get their tasting spoons for a $5 donation, with all proceeds going directly to support the Tryon Fire Alliance. The TDDA played a vital role in organizing the event alongside local businesses.

The competition featured mouthwatering lineups on Trade St. and Pacolet St. from numerous participants. Tryon Parks Superintendent Brad Gordon dished out his “Rootin Tootin Chili” while the Rotary Club showcased its culinary skills in front of Haven’s Salon. Other offerings included “Netflix and Chili” from Wild Petunias, “Fire in the Bowl” from Trade Street Diner and “Roadkill” from Southern Agenda, humorously noted as possibly containing possum.

On Pacolet St., Mirrorball Gallery presented their “Sparklefart” chili, a tasty Cuban-spiced creation. Meanwhile, The Livery served up spoonfuls of “Trotters” chili, Valhalla Cake Shop offered their “Valhallapenos” chili, and just across the street, the Fitzgerald featured their dish called “Get Your Chili Fitzed.”

Three teams were awarded after the event.. The Judge’s Pick, recipient of the “Copper Cauldron,” the People’s Choice, which was voted on by attendees, and Dog Mayor’s Pick.

For the 2025 event, the Judge’s Pick went to Southern Agenda’s “Roadkill,” and The Nest Corner Market earned Dog Mayor’s Choice. For the People’s Choice, first place went to Katie D’s, second place to Southern Agenda, and third place to Trade Street Diner.

As the day drew to a close, the laughter and spice-filled atmosphere left attendees eager for next year’s cookoff. With its perfect blend of community spirit and culinary prowess, the 2nd Annual Tryon Chili Cookoff proved once again to be a deliciously memorable celebration of local talent and teamwork.

The next 4th Friday event will take place between 5 and 7 p.m. on March 28, and will feature the band Holler and Crowe playing folk music on the Plaza.
