Polk County’s baseball team displayed both offensive fireworks and late-game resilience during Saturday’s Stott’s Ford Tournament action, splitting a pair of games at The Bottoms.
The Wolverines pounded Rosman 19-2 on Saturday morning before dropping a 6-5 decision to Brevard in Saturday evening’s tournament final.
Polk County 19, Rosman 2
Polk County unleashed an offensive onslaught in the early innings to overwhelm Rosman.
The Wolverines (2-1) wasted no time establishing control, sending 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run first inning. Junior Gunnar Alm highlighted the frame with a two-run triple, while Karson Scruggs contributed an RBI double.
Polk County’s dominance continued in the second inning as they sent 12 batters to the plate, pushing across eight more runs. Alm delivered another crushing blow with a bases-loaded triple, while Mason Beiler added a two-run double. Scruggs remained hot at the plate, collecting both a single and double in the inning alone.
Alm finished the game 2-for-3 with two triples and five RBI, matching a school record for triples in a game set by Richard McEntyre in 1998. Scruggs put together a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored.
The Wolverines’ offense produced 11 hits overall, with Nate Fagan going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mason Beiler (1-1, 2 RBI), Avrey Hensley (1-3), Noah Harden (1-2), and Mark Jarrett (1-1) all contributed to the hit column.
On the mound, Harden earned the win with a solid three-inning performance, striking out seven while allowing four hits. Piercen Edwards worked one inning, yielding one hit while striking out two. Fagan closed out the game with one inning of work that included one strikeout.
Brevard 6, Polk County 5
Despite a spirited late-game rally, Polk County fell just short against Brevard on a windy evening at The Bottoms.
The Blue Devils (3-0) broke open a tight contest with a four-run fourth inning, then added two more runs in the fifth to build a 6-1 advantage.
The Wolverines mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. Hensley was hit by a pitch to start the rally and eventually scored on Jarrett’s one-out single. After Jayce Edwards walked, consecutive free passes to Fagan, Alm and Harden forced in two more runs, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
Polk County continued to fight in the seventh. Hensley walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Jarrett’s fly ball was misplayed with one out. Edwards then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Hensley and move Jarrett into scoring position. However, Brevard secured the final out to preserve their victory and tournament championship.
Alm continued his strong play, going 1-for-2 with an RBI, three stolen bases and a run scored. Scruggs (1-1, RBI), Jarrett (1-3, RBI), and Edwards (0-2, RBI) also contributed to the offense.
On the mound, Alex Perry worked four innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out two. Aaden Denton provided three strong innings of relief, yielding just two hits while striking out two and holding Brevard scoreless.
The Wolverines are set to return to action Tuesday when they host Mitchell.
