Polk County Schools Superintendent Aaron Greene has announced his decision to retire, concluding a distinguished 30-year career with the district.

Greene recently informed the Polk County Board of Education of his intent to conclude his tenure effective June 30. Board Chairman Mike Ashworth said the search for Greene’s successor would begin immediately, with the district accepting applications through March 21.

The board hopes to select a new superintendent at its scheduled meeting on April 14.

“This decision comes with mixed emotions, as it has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve the students, staff and community of Polk County over these past 30 years,” Greene said. “During my tenure, I have witnessed the remarkable dedication and commitment of our educators, staff and board members to ensuring every child receives a high-quality education.”

Greene’s career in education began in 1994 as a mathematics teacher at Polk County High School. Following seven years in the classroom, he completed the Principal’s Executive Program at UNC Charlotte, including a one-year internship as assistant principal at Polk Central Elementary. His administrative career continued as assistant principal at Polk County High, where he later served as principal for eight years, the longest stint of any leader in the school’s history.

Greene transitioned to district administration in 2011 as director of curriculum and instruction before assuming the role of superintendent in 2016.

“Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated successes and strived to build a brighter future for our students,” Greene said. “I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made as a district and the strong foundation we have established for continued growth and achievement.

“As I look toward this new chapter in my life, I do so with immense gratitude for the support and collaboration of the Board of Education, the tireless efforts of our staff and the community’s dedication to our schools. I am confident that Polk County Schools will continue to thrive and maintain its commitment to excellence.”
