Polk County’s tournament magic came to an end Tuesday.

A night after upsetting third-seeded Brevard, the Wolverines were unable to repeat that feat in the semifinals of the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Basketball Tournament, falling 63-36 to second-seeded R-S Central before a home crowd.

The Hilltoppers (15-9) scored 12 of the game’s first 13 points and stifled Polk County’s offense, holding the Wolverines (5-18) to just five points in the first half. Much of that was due to R-S Central’s defensive pressure, which forced a handful of Polk turnovers and kept the Wolverines from getting into an offensive rhythm.

Polk did rally late in the third quarter, cutting a 30-point deficit to 18 at the end of the period. But R-S Central quickly built on that 39-21 advantage in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the final margin.

Aaron Jackson led Polk County with 14 points, all of those in the second half. Khristian Littlejohn added eight points, with senior Jayce Edwards scoring four points in his final game.

Kamron Cunningham added three points, with Ross Dow, Luke Garrison and David Duffy each scoring two and Chase Stansbury adding one.
