Tryon to celebrate Nina Simone’s birthday with tribute, after-party

TRYON—On Friday, downtown Tryon will host a special celebration honoring Nina Simone’s birthday. Simone, born Eunice Waymon in Tryon on February 21, 1933, was a world-renowned singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. The event will feature a gathering at the Nina Simone Plaza on Trade Street at 5 p.m., followed by an after-party at Mirrorball Gallery’s lounge at 6 p.m.

The evening will kick off with a tribute to Simone at the Plaza as fans, artists, and community members honor her enduring legacy through music, spoken word, and reflections on her impact. 

“Nina Simone was a groundbreaking artist whose music blended jazz, blues, classical, and gospel,” said Mirrorball Gallery’s Alex Page. “She was not only a renowned singer, pianist, and songwriter but also a passionate civil rights activist. Her powerful voice and emotionally charged performances left an indelible mark on music and culture worldwide.”

The celebration will continue at Mirrorball Gallery’s Lounge, located at 84 Pacolet Street, with music, drinks, and an atmosphere befitting the “High Priestess of Soul.”
