Karsyn Huskey saved her best for last.

Running the final race of her indoor track and field career, the Polk County senior set a new school record in the 1000-meter run en route to finishing third at the 1A/2A state championship in Winston-Salem.

Huskey sped around the JDL Fast Track complex in 3:04.66, easily topping the old mark of 3:07 set by 11-time state champion Jennifer Dimsdale in the 1996-97 season.

Swain’s Annie Lewis broke the state record in winning the 1000 in 2:56.36, with Pine Lake Prep’s Maya Little also topping the old mark in finishing second in 2:58.45

Huskey also helped Polk’s 4×400-meter relay team to a 10th-place finish, teaming with Louisa Wood, Naomi Martinez and Renee Bright for a time of 4:31.47.

Polk junior Leah Dotson cleared 8-0 in the pole vault to finish 10th, while the Wolverine boys 4×400-meter relay team was disqualified for completing a handoff outside the allowed zone.

The Cummings girls and Seaforth boys claimed the top spots in the team competition.

After finishing two points behind Swain County in the 2024 championships, the Cavaliers outscored the Maroon Devils by 5.5 points this year as the two teams swapped places on the podium. This is the 12th indoor track and field championship for Cummings.

The Cavaliers were led by junior D’Anna Cotton, who won the Most Valuable Player award for the second year in a row. Cotton won the long jump, triple jump, high jump (tying the meet record) and took second in the 55-meter hurdles.

Cotton was also MVP of the outdoor 2A meet in 2024.

The Maroon Devils were led by Arizona Blankenship, who added to her impressive collection of NCHSAA state championships with first-place finishes in the 3200- and 1600-meter events. She also ran a leg for the 4×800 meter relay team that took first place.

In the men’s competition, the Seaforth Hawks claimed the first championship in program history after finishing in seventh place in 2024.

The Hawks dominated in the distance events as three-time defending cross country champion Jack Anstrom won the 3200 for the second year in a row. Will Cuicchi won the 1000 with a new 1A/2A meet record-setting time and took second in the 1600, and Sebastian Calderon won the 500.

Farmville Central finished as runner-up in the event with 37 points, 25 points behind Seaforth. The Jaguars were led by Cameron Sessoms, who won the 55-meter hurdles and ran the opening leg of the 4×200 relay team that took second.
