Polk County’s girls basketball team closed its regular season Friday with another bit of history.
The Wolverines thumped Brevard 65-25 to finish the season undefeated in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play. It marks the first time a Polk County team has put together a perfect conference record.
Polk (20-1, 12-0) raced to a 20-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and were never threatened thereafter, triggering a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Bailey Staton led the Wolverines with 16 points, with Kylie Lewis adding 15, Kiera Littlejohn scoring 12 and Reeve Carroll adding 10.
Mia Bradley added six points, with Honesty Jackson, Jeri Allen and Jayden Duncan each scoring two.
Polk County will next compete in the MF7 postseason tournament. Polk will serve as the host school for the boys and girls semifinals and finals.
The Wolverine girls will receive a first-round bye and were set to face either Brevard or R-S Central in Tuesday’s semifinals. The girls and boys championship games will also be played at Polk County on Friday.
It will be the final MF7 tournament, with schools slated to move to different conferences next season as part of the NCHSAA realignment process held every four years.
