“History of the Saluda Grade” to be presented at Landrum Library

LANDRUM—Local history buffs will have an opportunity to learn more about Saluda’s railroad history during a free lecture at Landrum Library on Tuesday, February 18.

The program, entitled “The History of the Saluda Grade,” will be presented by the Saluda Historic Depot and museum docent David O’Brien at 6 p.m. This lecture is part of Conserving Carolina’s monthly Speaker Series at the Landrum Library,

The Saluda Grade’s history spans from 1830 to 2001 when the last train passed through the area. Tuesday’s presentation will cover many of the important events that occurred during that period, including several advancements in railroading that resulted from operating on the Grade.

O’Brien moved to the area 16 years ago, across the valley from Melrose at the bottom of the Grade. In 2017, he became active in the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors and the unofficial museum historian.
