Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, James Howard Burnett Jr., suffering from multiple lacerations and wounds. His injuries were the result of an attack by four pit bulls belonging to him, according to Chief Jeff Ramsey with the sheriff’s office. Burnett’s daughter, Jessica Jackson, told the Bulletin that the pit bulls belonged to a family member who lived next door.

Officials say that the dogs attacked Burnett while he was attempting to prevent them from attacking another pet.

The injuries to Burnett were so severe that deputies had to apply a tourniquet to one of his limbs. Burnett was flown to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he remains in the intensive care unit as of press time.

All four dogs were euthanized and sent to a lab for rabies testing. Lab results are currently unavailable.
