COLUMBUS—Outreach is strengthening its efforts to assist underserved families and individuals in Polk County with a new initiative to address pressing housing repair needs. The organization, which has long been dedicated to providing vital day-to-day necessities such as food, heat, and housing, has recently expanded its home repair program to serve the community more effectively.

Launched as a pilot program in 2022, this initiative was made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Gateway Wellness Foundation. The funds were directed toward essential home repairs, including roofing, HVAC systems, and plumbing, for those who qualified based on income.

“On the shelter and housing end, Outreach has initiated a home repair program to see how they can help the local community,” said Executive Director Margot Carter.

The program’s pilot phase proved successful. Outreach repaired 13 homes, comprising six roof repairs, three plumbing fixes, and two HVAC installations. This experience allowed the organization to forge valuable partnerships with contractors, builders, and volunteers, enhancing their service capabilities.

With the program’s launch now full-time, Outreach has recently secured a $132,000 grant through the Urgent Repair Program (URP) from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. This funding is specifically designated for emergency home repairs for low-income homeowners facing significant challenges, particularly in roofing, ramps, HVAC, and plumbing areas. Additionally, the organization received $25,000 from Doors of Change, a Polk County-based charity, to further support the program.

“Even in its short time, the home repair program has been impactful and life-changing,” remarked Client Services Manager Michelle Reedy. “We are always seeking additional funding and volunteers to continue and improve the program.”

This expanded home repair initiative highlights Outreach’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Polk County’s residents, ensuring they have safe and secure living conditions. As they continue seeking community support, Outreach invites local volunteers and potential donors to contribute to this vital program that promises to transform the lives of many needy families.
