TRYON—Tryon Little Theater’s big season musical, “Gypsy: A Musical Fable,” will run for two weekends at the Tryon Fine Arts Center beginning on Friday, February 28. Rehearsals have been underway for weeks, and the cast for the show was recently announced. It will be directed by Laura Depta Peal, with musical direction from Pam McNeil.
With lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and music by Jule Styne, “Gypsy” is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with “the ultimate show business mother.” Ethel Merman was the voice most associated with the role of Mama Rose, determined to make her daughters stars of the vaudeville circuit and living vicariously through them —chasing the stardom she had desperately wanted for herself.
Lori Lee, a favorite on the TLT stage, brings Ethel Merman and Mama Rose to life. She is joined by a talented cast as we watch her girls grow into adults, traipsing from audition to audition, trying to fulfill Mama’s dreams.
The adult cast members of the show include Laura Baird, Maggie Carter, Jen Clark, Brenda Craig, Liam Daniels, Paula Edwards, Ed Harrelson, Annika Knudson, Lori Lee, Mason Lee, Jennifer Monterisi, Emily O’Connor, Joel Perkin, Holly Shockley, Elizabeth Turner, and Scott Waddell. The young cast includes Adam Baglia, Grace Baglia, Evan Baird, Badge Burrell, Catherine Finch, Kenna LeCompte, Cara McSwain, Eris Palmer, and Eva Test.
The show will run from February 28 to March 2 and March 7 to March 9. Tickets for “Gypsy – A Musical Fable” are $15 and $30, including fees, and are available online at tltinfo.org or by calling (828) 859-2466.
