MILL SPRING—Despite the devastation of Tropical Storm Helene, Chimney Rock’s beloved tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day will continue for a 20th consecutive year thanks to a collaboration with the Tryon International Equestrian Center. While Chimney Rock State Park remains closed due to storm damage, park staff are committed to continuing this beloved community event.
On February 2, from noon to 2 p.m., families are invited to join in the fun at this free, family-friendly event. Attendees of all ages can look forward to engaging activities hosted by park naturalists and staff, including meeting Chimney Rock’s beloved animal ambassadors and creating groundhog-themed crafts. The day’s highlight will be Tater the Groundhog’s annual prediction at 1:30 p.m.
“We are incredibly grateful to Tryon International for their generous support in providing a venue while we rebuild after the storm,” said park spokesperson Maddie Kaniewski. “Despite the challenges, we are determined to come together to celebrate and welcome the spring, a season of renewal and hope.”
Attendees at the celebrations will witness Tater’s forecast regarding the arrival of spring and the outcome of Super Bowl LIX, with announcements made by Chimney Rock Village Mayor Peter O’Leary. Historically, Chimney Rock groundhogs have boasted a 60% accuracy rate in spring predictions and Super Bowl outcomes, so anticipation is high for this year’s forecast.
In addition to the main event, TIEC will feature ice skating, a carousel, and various dining options for the whole family. Visitors will also have the chance to explore WNC Main Street, where local businesses impacted by Helene will be open for shopping, allowing the community to show their support.
For those unable to attend in person, the festivities will be streamed live on Facebook, starting at 1:30 p.m., with a full video available by 3 p.m.
