This past Monday, Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. Election results show that for most Americans, this was an exciting day filled with hope for the future of our great nation. Yet, for others, it was a day of anguish and uncertainty. Truth is, if you live through enough election cycles, you will eventually find yourself on both sides of this political spectrum. The challenge we all face is not allowing such things to rule over us.
It is human nature to put our hope in a political figure or party so that we feel like conquerors when our party is on top and feel as if the sky is falling when our candidate or party is no longer in power.
So how do we maintain a sense of balance and hope no matter who is sitting at the desk inside the Oval Office or who has control of Congress? We must remember that no matter who is president, we still have the same King.
The 2020 election cycle was rife with claims that the election was stolen. I am neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, and it is not my desire to speculate about such matters, but I do know one thing. Whoever serves in the White House was not only elected by the people, he was appointed for this purpose by One who is greater. Speaking of this, Daniel 2:21 tells us of one who “removes kings and raises up kings.” This entails even the most powerful positions on earth are under the lordship of a greater King. But who is this King?
At the close of Matthew’s gospel, we find Jesus Christ standing on a hill outside of Jerusalem with His followers, who have been there for a little over a month after His crucifixion and resurrection from the dead. Just before He ascended into heaven, He made an astounding claim: “All authority as been given to me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18). Then, looking back to the Psalms, we find a prophecy about what took place in heaven immediately after He spoke these words, “The LORD (God the Father) said to my Lord (God the Son), “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Psalm 110:1, emphasis mine).
This tells us that there is One sitting on the throne in heaven who is greater than the most powerful king on earth and is presently ruling and reigning over the nations; His name is Jesus! And there is coming a day when every knee will bow to His Lordship, whether in this life or the next (Philippians 2:21).
So, no matter which earthly ruler is in charge today, remember who is really on the throne and has the whole wide world in His hands. This day and every day make sure that your highest allegiance isn’t to an earthly ruler but to Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. We may have a new president, but the same King still reigns over all.
