TRYON—Trio Bohémo will perform at the Tryon Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. The event is presented by the Tryon Concert Association.
Trio Bohémo was formed in 2019 by three young Czech musicians: Pianist Jan Vojtek, violinist Matouš Pěruška, and cellist Kristina Vocetkov. The ensemble is known for “precision, dedication and a spark of magic” (Aulakonzerte Göttingen). The trio has performed at venues across Europe, including the Vienna Musikverein, Wigmore Hall in London, Prague Spring, Schwartzwald Musikfestival in Germany, and Festival van Vlaanderen in Ghent, Belgium. One reviewer wrote that the ensemble was “on fire” at its Wigmore Hall recital.
The trio’s many prizes and awards include the Weimar International Music Competition in 2022, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2023, the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Austria, and the International Parkhouse Award in London.
The program in Tryon will feature three works. Bedřich Smetana’s Trio No. 1 in G minor for piano, violin, and cello, Op. 15, was inspired by the death of the composer’s young daughter and is a tribute to her life. Poignant and touching, it is a fitting tribute to a beloved child.
Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, B. 166, “Dumky,” is influenced by Bohemian folk music and illustrates Dvořák’s characteristic expression of volatile emotions and sharply contrasting moods. “Dumky,” the Slavonic musical form that emphasizes emotional volatility, at once reflects joy and melancholy and found its way into many of the composer’s other works.
Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music is described by the composer as “a kind of high-class dinner music” and draws on early 20th century American, Viennese, gypsy, and Broadway styles. With humor and imagination, the music takes the listener on a jovial evening out.
Come to the concert on January 28 for the belated celebration of TCA’s 70th season of bringing the best of chamber music to the Tryon area.
