Tanner Owens makes name for himself in the competitive world of mixed martial arts
LANDRUM– At just 15 years old, Tanner Owens is making a name for himself in the competitive world of mixed martial arts.
A sophomore at Landrum High School, Tanner recently competed in a prestigious tournament held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He represented the United States in the Gamma Organization’s World Championships. His talent was on display as he brought home a silver medal, placing second among an impressive field of young fighters aged 6 to 17. The Gamma Organization has gained recognition through the Olympics, adding prestige to Tanner’s accomplishments.
Tanner’s parents are dedicated supporters of his training and competition, often cheering him on at the gym and during matches. His mother, Sonya Ownes, reflects on his journey and recalls how different this sport is for their family.
“My other sons played baseball, and I have always been a baseball mom,” she said. “Watching Tanner excel at this sport has been a proud moment for him and his father.”
Ahead of the championship, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking sponsorship and selling T-shirts to raise necessary funds. Tanner expresses gratitude towards his sponsors, including The Fight Doctors, Landrum Hardware, Love Springs Baptist Church, and Superior Cranes, along with others who have supported him through shirt purchases and prayers. He wears Jesus’s name on his chest to honor his “#1 Sponsor.”
Despite the physical challenges and risks associated with MMA, Tanner demonstrates maturity beyond his years. He enjoys the competitive aspect and rigorous training regimen that the sport demands.
“I love the training and the competition,” Tanner said, showcasing his dedication.
Looking forward, Tanner has ambitious aspirations for his MMA career. His ultimate goal is to fight professionally, share his knowledge with others, and become a mentor in the sport. Tanner’s next opportunity to showcase his skills will be at the National Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, from February 28 to March 2. Afterward, he will prepare for the next World Championships in Brazil in June.
After returning from Jakarta, Tanner’s commitment and hard work were recognized when he was promoted to Junior Black Belt at Revolution MMA in Inman, SC. His coaches, Jimmy Fowler and Jonathan “Homie” Hensley, praised his commitment and determination, further cementing Tanner’s status as a rising star in the MMA community.
