TRYON—On Wednesday, December 4, the Literary Open Stage returned to the Tryon Arts and Crafts School. The event engaged the community with a night of original works from local writers, poets, musicians, and storytellers. Starting after the holiday season, it will occur every third Wednesday of the month.
Led by local poet and educator David Riddle alongside artist Janet Orselli, the Literary Open Stage has become a longstanding monthly open mic evening, providing a platform for diverse voices.
“It was at one time at the Upstairs Gallery and the Lanier Library, but when Covid came, it disrupted everything,” said Riddle. “We had some sessions when it was allowed, but we were still without a permanent location. We were thrilled when Will Barclift, TACS Executive Director, offered us this home.”
The doors opened at 6 p.m., welcoming attendees to enjoy lively conversations amid the new displays and artwork. Readings began at 6:30. Each participant was allotted five minutes, ensuring a rich tapestry of voices and stories filled the evening.
“We’ve had all kinds of poetry and original stories, and we’d even be open to music if someone wanted to share. Anyone with something to share is welcome,” Riddle shared.
This gathering marked the second event hosted at TACS, following an evening centered on ekphrastic poetry, which explores art through the written word, based on works by Kevin Sprouls and Janet Orselli.
From the whimsical seat of Santa’s chair, eight presenters captivated a small crowd with their readings, sharing tales ranging from the comedic frustrations of relaying a recipe to reflective musings by the sea and various poems. The evening concluded with two heartwarming Christmas stories, capturing the season’s spirit.
As the Literary Open Stage grows in its new home, it promises to remain a cherished event for the Tryon community, fostering creativity and connection through storytelling.
