Montgomery family transforms home each season for over 50 years
INMAN—The festive season is upon us, and the much-loved Christmas House at 360 Foster Road in Inman kicked its dazzling display of lights and decorations on November 28. It will run nightly until December 31, from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
Sandra and Bill Montgomery dedicate about six weeks yearly to decorating their home. For over five decades, 51 years to be exact, the Montgomery family has transformed their home into a spectacular holiday showcase, drawing thousands of visitors eager to experience the magic. The tradition began in 1973, a few years after suburban America started adorning its homes with Christmas lights, quickly becoming a beloved custom.
By day, the house appears as a typical Christmas decoration site, but as the sun sets, it morphs into a vibrant winter wonderland, aptly dubbed “The Christmas House.” Each night at 5:30 p.m., approximately 130,000 lights illuminate the property, bringing joy and smiles to all who drive by.
The heart of this cherished tradition lies with Sandra, whose father began decorating for Christmas decades ago. After his passing in 2005, she and her husband vowed to keep his legacy alive by continuing the family tradition. Sandra recalls how her father would work on the decorations alone while using a golf cart to move around the property. Each installation gives people, young and old, a reason to return.
For the Montgomerys, this annual endeavor is about more than just lights; it symbolizes a heartfelt tribute to a loved one. The Christmas House will keep its lights aglow until 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, inviting all to come and bask in the joy of the season.
