TRYON—Tryon Arts & Crafts School recently announced two special programs in the wood department, led by acclaimed artisans Cynthia Carden and Mark Hancock. Both artists are new to TACS’ instructor pool. The workshops will take place on Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cynthia Carden is a master pyrographer—a.k.a., wood burner—based in Spartanburg. She is widely regarded for her signature line of “Amazing Dolls,” inspired by Japanese kokeshi dolls. She collaborates with internationally recognized woodturners who craft the doll bodies from her designs, which she adorns with intricate pyrographic details. Her work explores themes of nature, folklore, and human connection. 

Carden’s “Amazing Dolls” have been featured in prestigious exhibitions like the International Guild of Woodcarvers Showcase and are included in private collections and publications across the globe. She has received numerous awards, including recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Cynthia’s Pyrography Workshop at TACS will introduce participants to the art of woodburning and guide them in decorating unique single-slab maple cutting boards. 

Mark Hancock is a renowned woodturner and educator originally from the United Kingdom. Mark is a registered professional turner with a teaching certificate (PTLLS), and over 35 years of tutoring and turning experience. Before recently moving to the United States, Mark was a faculty member at Pen-y-Graig Woodland Centre, Peter Sefton Furniture School, and West Dean College, with his instructional practice branching throughout Europe. 

He recently showcased his mastery of form and innovation as a featured demonstrator at the Mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium in Pennsylvania. Hancock’s work has been shown in prominent exhibitions, such as the American Association of Woodturners juried show, and is included in esteemed collections worldwide.

Mark’s Bowl Turning Workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the craft of woodturning. He will share his expertise on techniques, tool selection, and design principles and each student will leave with a finished bowl.
