POLK COUNTY—The community is invited to celebrate Smokey’s 80th birthday by joining the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge at Polk County Public Libraries. Participants can join Smokey in learning about wildfire prevention and the environment by reading books, taking action, and having fun. 

Challenge packets are available at Columbus Library and Saluda Library. The challenge runs from September 1 to October 31. It is geared for ages 4 to 10, but all ages are welcome.

Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires. As one of the world’s most recognizable characters, Smokey’s image is protected by U.S. federal law and is administered by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council. 

Despite the campaign’s success over the years, wildfire prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting our country. Smokey’s message is as relevant and urgent today as it was in 1944.

Polk County Public Libraries also has several programs planned this fall that coincide with the reading challenge. These events include learning about black bears with Chimney Rock State Park and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, a “s’moreytime” and community campfire with Polk County Parks & Rec., fire prevention week storytimes with local fire departments, and a visit from Smokey Bear himself courtesy of the NC Forest Service.
