LANDRUM—In a hard-fought season opener, the Landrum Cardinals team lost 20-14 to the Walhalla Razorbacks. The game, which took place at Cardinal Stadium Friday night, marked Coach Brent Bridges’ first game as head coach.
Despite their victory, the Razorbacks struggled with turnovers, losing three of five fumbles throughout the game. Both teams had a slow start on offense. Still, the Razorbacks’ offense gained momentum early, led by senior running back Landon Robinson, who delivered an outstanding performance with 217 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries, including a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Landrum quarterback junior Ty Foster opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the second quarter with a 6-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Micah McClintock, tying the game 7-7 with just under three minutes left in the half. However, Robinson quickly responded with a 45-yard ground gain, culminating in a five-yard scoring run to give Walhalla a 14-7 halftime lead.
In the second half, Walhalla’s quarterback Williams completed a 65-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, extending the lead to 20-7. Landrum pulled closer after a Walhalla fumble as Foster led a four-play, 15-yard scoring drive, narrowing the lead to 20-14, but the Cards were unable to complete the comeback.
Foster led the Cardinal team in rushing, with nine carries for 64 yards and throwing for 114 yards on 14 of 34 pass attempts and a touchdown. The Cardinals finished the game with 182 total offensive yards and one lost fumble.
With the season opener behind them, the Cardinals, now at 0-1, are gearing up to secure their first win of the season next Friday night, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. with a road game against Class 4A opponent the Berea Bulldogs, who will be playing their first game of the season.
