Manny Albarran scored a pair of goals to back Polk County’s solid defensive effort Monday as the Wolverines topped North Henderson 2-0 in Hendersonville.

Polk County (1-1) ticked the scoreboard once in the first half as Albarran collected a rebound of a Thomas Varnadore shot and found the net, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead that stood at the half.

Albarran scored again in the second half, taking a pass from James Purtill off the left flank and bending a shot just inside the top right post.

Head coach George Alley cited the play of his defense, especially given the large size of North Henderson’s field, as key to the win.

“Nate Martinez and Tanner Osborn controlled the midfield,” Alley said. “Defense of Will (Garrison), Noah (Greve), Mason (Hudson), Riley (Ballentine), David (Alvarez) and Charlie (Wagoner) were solid. Our first clean sheet.”

Polk County returns to action on Thursday, hosting Tri-County Early College at 6 p.m. in G.M. Tennant Stadium.
