South Carolina’s annual Tax Free Weekend will kick off on Friday, August 2, and conclude on August 4. This year marks the 24th anniversary of the event.
“As inflation continues to drain many wallets, this year’s Tax Free Weekend offers some relief for weary families,” said SCDOR Director Hartley Powell. “Every shopper saves money during this tax holiday, particularly on back-to-school essentials.”
During this three-day period, a wide range of items will be exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax or any applicable local taxes. These include computers, printers, school supplies, diapers, earbuds and headphones, purses, shoes, and certain bed and bath items. A full list of eligible items, which can be new or used, can be found at dor.sc.gov/taxfreeweekend. Eligible items can be purchased online or in-store without incurring sales tax.
According to the SC Department of Revenue, last year’s tax-free weekend saw shoppers cash in on more than $30 million worth of tax-free items, benefiting consumers and boosting retail businesses during the event.
North Carolina repealed a similar tax holiday in 2014.
