Humblebrag. Don’t you just want to say the word over and over—it’s rather fun! Maybe not so fun when people actually engage in it. 

 

If you’re not enlightened as to what it is, humblebrag is defined as: an ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.

 

For example, some of those posts on social media are nothing but blathering humblebrag sessions sent out to everybody and his brother. This could explain why few truly enjoy reading all about someone else’s year of self-important accomplishments and awards, over-the-top excursions to Katmandu in luxury wearing a newly-acquired Hope Diamond to light the night skies, a herd of new fancy vehicles (sans fingerprints and crumbs) lined up like jewels in a heated architect-designed garage, or Junior’s acceptance to all the Ivy League schools on top of already being a brain surgeon in first grade. 

 

Oh yes, we get it. And it’s time for all guilty humble-bumbles to hush up about how modest they are when they are dying to brag all about it. There’s the delight of being happy and excited which is sharing joy with others; and then there are just lack-of-manners in how you carry on braying about you and yours—over and over. Hush, humblebraggarts! Now what a great Valentine’s gift that will be for the rest of us! 

 

Saluda Winter Market is at Saluda Center, 64 Greenville Street, on 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. through April. 

 

Saluda’s Sister City friends Massimo and Dino from Carunchio, Italy are visiting town from Feb. 8 through Feb. 14. They’ll be visiting the school, along with sharing drawings and letters from the children in Carunchio. 

 

The 18th annual Saluda Arts Festival is scheduled for May 20. For information, visit saluda.com. Artist applications are due by March 1; volunteers and sponsors are needed!
