First of three summer programs is set for Friday
The Hoopz at Harmon Field basketball event will be held at Harmon Field this week, a continuation of events held in early May. The games are made possible by Gather Together, a nonprofit organization, and will take place on Friday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the recently updated basketball courts at Harmon Field.
The first basketball tournament featured nine three-person teams and was held at the same location. The kids were treated to drinks and snacks by some wonderful volunteers, with the winners of the games receiving prizes.
This is the first of three summer events planned by Gather Together with a
dodgeball tournament and frisbee events to follow. Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Polk County is a co-sponsor along with the Tryon Presbyterian Church.
Gather Together was founded by Steve Martinez in his home state of California, and has hosted several successful events locally for kids since relocating to Polk County. The goals of the organization are primarily to help underserved youth in Polk County, but it is open to all youth who want to participate in positive and faith-based sports activities. The organization partners with nonprofits and civic, educational, and faith-based organizations in an effort to give local youth a chance to engage in free athletics, without having to worry about fees, snacks, or anything other than having fun.
Anyone wishing to volunteer or help with these activities, please touch base with Martinez at 909-322-4853. Gather Together welcomes all parents and friends to come out and support our local youth basketball teams and players.
