South Carolina Department of Transportation closes road until further notice
LAKE LANIER—The South Carolina Department of Transportation closed the bridge over the Lake Lanier Dam on Friday.
The state notified the Town of Tryon of the closure on Friday with state officials saying the bridge would be closed until further notice.
The Town of Tryon owns the water and the dam and the state owning the roads.
Tryon Town Manager Zach Ollis said this week that state engineers are coming in the next couple of weeks to inspect the road again.
It is not known until after the state inspects the bridge if it will be a temporary or permanent closure.
The state said a few years ago it would close the road in the future after the state did an inspection.
The town recently had engineers do an inspection of the dam, as required by the state, and once the SCDOT got that report, which included that the bridge has issues, the state closed the road until further notice.
The bridge is located on West Lakeshore Drive. People can access West Lakeshore Drive from South Trade Street to Jervey Road and Calendonia Road to West Lakeshore.
East Lakeshore Drive will not be affected by the closure.
For questions or more information, people can contact the Greenville office of the SCDOT by calling 864-241-1224.
