Awards banquet held for Unity summer camp closing ceremony

Family, friends, as well as the community got a chance to get an up-close look at the happenings of this year’s Summer Enrichment Camp, sponsored by the Unity in the Community Organization.

 

A large crowd gathered as the closing ceremony, award and recognition banquet was recently held. Johnny Wlison, Fayetteville’s Urban Ministry, Executive Director, was the guest speaker. An average of 50 youth from the Polk County and Landrum areas attended the three-week camp, which was filled with fun and educational activities. The campers ranged from age eight through 17 years of age.

As a representative from each age group took to the podium to give their experiences and encounter of the camp, tears of joy, appreciation and a ton of laughter were on tap for the entire evening.

 

The campers were divided into five different age groups. Instructors, Martha Staley, Paige McIntyre, Heber Najera, Byrce Martin and Mitchell Brown, awarded two deserving campers, within their particular group with trophies for Citizenship (conduct) and The Extra Mile Award (making strides and accomplishments).

 

The Summer Enrichment Camp Director, John Paul McIntrye presented the Director’s Award to Tesun Miller, for accomplishments during the 2018-2019 Camp.

 

The President’s Award, was presented to Outstanding Campers, DeAndre Twitty, Nate Henderson, and Kaleb McEntyre, by David Staley, the President of the UITC.

 

Mrs. Cecelia Miller (Mrs. CeCe, the Farmer), the coordinator of the Herb Garden and Beehive Project, presented awards to, Zakkiyah Austin and Shanae Tickling for Outstanding Participation, in the two projects.

 

Fred Hartley, of the Tryon Rotary Club, and who was instrumental and the driving force to make the SEC College Tour a reality, gave encouraging remarks to Camper, Staff and the Community.

 

The Summer Enrichment Camp was funded by a generous grant from the Polk County Community Foundation.
