Wolverines move into state 1A volleyball semis

Once again, Polk County is one win away from playing for a state volleyball championship.

The Wolverines reached the state semifinals for the second straight year, topping Alleghany 3-1 Tuesday in a 1A quarterfinal match in Sparta.

Polk County (19-8) posted a 25-16, 25-21, 27-29, 25-23 victory to advance to Thursday’s semifinal, where the Wolverines will travel to face East Surry. The Cardinals (25-4), the top seed in the 1A West bracket, defeated defending state champion Community School of Davidson 3-0 on Tuesday for their 17th straight win.

Polk County senior Ansley Lynch had 22 digs in the win to surpass the 1,000 mark for her career.

Marilyn Castillo had 22 kills for the Wolverines, with Grace Lauer adding 12 and Mireya Roman finishing with nine kills and 11 blocks. Kristen Hall had eight kills and 29 digs.

Sydney Waldman had 50 assists and 18 digs, with Landry Edwards adding 13 digs. Carolina Castillo had four aces.

Up two sets to one, Polk County fought back from a 20-14 deficit in the final set to secure the match win.
