Wolverines rout Avery, match school record with ninth straight victory

Polk County’s baseball team matched the school record for consecutive victories, winning its ninth straight game in a 17-0 triumph Tuesday at Avery.
The Western Highlands Conference win improved Polk County’s record to 10-1 overall, 8-0 in WHC play. The 2009 Polk County team won nine straight games during its 11-1 start.
Polk County was slated to travel Wednesday to West Henderson for a nonconference game.
Avery Edwards threw a three-hit complete game with nine strikeouts to back Polk County’s 15-hit attack. The Wolverines scored nine first-inning runs and tallied in every frame thereafter in winning in five innings.
Holden Owens finished 3-for-3 with a double and triple and three runs scored and Nick Capozzi was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs to lead Polk County’s offense.
Wilson Edwards was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Sedric Pickett was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Clark Phipps finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs, Elijah Sutton was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Evan Rimer, Tyler Harris and Grayson Jones each added base hits.
