An eight-run first inning by Chase proved too much for Polk County to overcome Tuesday, as the Wolverines dropped a 9-7 Mountain Foothills 7 Conference softball decision in Forest City.

The loss dropped Polk County to 10-9 overall, 4-5 in conference play, while Chase improved to 11-8, 6-3.

Despite the early deficit, the Lady Wolverines made a valiant comeback effort, scoring in four different innings and putting together a multi-faceted offensive attack that produced 11 hits.

Tory Coile led Polk County with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Mia Bradley, Laney Littlefield and Junie Mitchell each collected two hits. Bradley had a triple and double while Littlefield and Mitchell each added doubles.

The Wolverines opened the game by grabbing an early 3-0 advantage. Littlefield singled and Mitchell doubled to start the rally before Elizabeth Vitale drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. After Coile singled, Emma Hayford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.

Polk County added two more runs in the third inning as Miya Jackson walked and Coile singled before both eventually scored, with Aslyn Scruggs driving in one run on a groundout and Bradley bringing home another with a single.

The Wolverines’ final scoring came in the sixth inning as Scruggs singled and Bradley doubled, with both runners ultimately crossing the plate to narrow the gap to two runs.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Wednesday at Polk County, with first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
