Polk’s school enrollment decreased more than 300 over past decade

POLK COUNTY-Polk County School enrollment has decreased by 330 students from 2008-2017, according to Polk County’s audit report for fiscal year 2016-2017.
School enrollment in Polk County dropped from 2,477 in 2008 to 2,147 in 2017, according to statistics included in the county’s latest audit report.
The only significant increase in school enrollment occurred between 2014 and 2015 when enrollment increased from 2,246 to 2,276. Most other years, enrollment has decreased in the last decade, with the largest decrease between 2015 and 2016 when enrollment decreased by 109 students. Another significant decrease was between 2011 and 2012, when enrollment decreased by 62 students.
Enrollment dropped from 2,477 in 2008 to 2,444 in 2009, according to the county’s statistics, which are taken from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, first month average daily membership.
Between 2009 and 2010, enrollment dropped from 2,444 to 2,385, then continued to drop the years following to 2,355 in 2011 and 2,293 in 2012. Enrollment rose by one student in 2013 to 2,294 and dropped again in 2014 to 2,246.
Polk County Schools saw 2,276 students in 2015; 2,167 in 2016 and 2,147 students in 2017, according to the audit report.
Polk County has four elementary schools, including Polk Central, Saluda, Sunny View and Tryon, Polk County Middle School, Polk County High School and an early college.
