Putting Saint Joseph’s Catholic in a 14-2 hole after the first quarter helped the Landrum Cardinals trounce the visiting Knights, 62-29, to surge to 2-0 in women’s varsity region basketball, on Friday, Jan. 12.

The Cards are 13-2 overall. Canning 14 points, Landrum’s Lindsey Hardin led all scorers. Teammate Sarah Price added 13, including two three-pointers, with Ellen Boatwright scoring eight, and Cardinals’ Bailey Butler and Sarah Harris popping six apiece. Brittany Morris led the Knights (1-6 overall, and 0-2 in the region) with nine.

In spite of being a bit off on their outside shooting, the Cards still found the hoop, and a way to win.

“The girls were sore from lifting this week, after being off (for the holiday),” explained Landrum head coach Deon Brice, “so our outside shots were not falling. We had to rely on defense to get us going. They (his players) played four quarters of good basketball. We were able to bring intensity the whole game. That’s what we’ve been working on for a while.”

Brice added that achieving a good start in the region is a plus. “We just have to keep working to stay at the top,” he added.

Yesterday, the Cardinals met Spartanburg Christian Academy (SCA) in the Prep Hoops Showcase at Greenville High School. Results were not available at press time. SCA has handed the Cardinals both their losses.

This evening, the Cardinals visit Christ Church Episcopal. On Friday, Jan. 19, the Cardinals visit Greer Middle College High School.
