Wolverines blank Avery, clinch 1A playoff berth

Polk County’s girls tennis team rolled past Avery on Thursday, posting a 9-0 win in a Western Highlands Conference match in Newland.
With the win, the Wolverines (11-2, 4-0) are assured of a berth in the state 1A dual team playoffs as the WHC’s 1A representative. The 24-team 1A playoffs begin Oct. 18. Avery, the other 1A team in the WHC, dropped to 2-11 overall, 1-3 in conference play.
Polk County easily won eight of the nine matches, with Haven Dufford winning a tiebreaker over Aidan Betz at No. 3 singles. Hannah Jenne (10-1), Tana Harris (10-2), Julia Griffin (10-0), Bella Marino (10-0) and Virginia Rostick (10-1) easily won their singles matches.
Jenne-Harris (8-0), Marino and Ava Marino (8-2) and Willow Arkell and Trinity Branham (8-2) were doubles winners.
Polk County will host East Rutherford on Monday in a non-conference match before hosting Mountain Heritage on Tuesday in the Wolverines’ final regular-season home match of the season.
