The 49er Classic track and field meet at UNC Charlotte last weekend turned into a reunion for former Polk County High School athletes.
Five former Wolverines competed in the event, held Friday and Saturday at UNCC’s Irwin Belk Track & Field Center. That group included two brothers as well as two athletes who competed against each other.
Winston-Salem State freshman Mitchell Brown ran unattached, as the Rams don’t have a men’s track and field team this season. Brown competed in the 5000-meter run and placed 60th with a time of 16:12.32.
Brown’s older brother, Jordan, is a Brevard College senior competing with the track team this season. Brown finished the 100-meter dash in 11.95 and also ran with the 4×100-meter relay team that failed to record a time.
Montreat College sophomore Eli Hall took part in the 800-meter run, finishing 61th in 2:02.99, and ran with the school’s 4×400-meter relay team, which placed 15th in a time of 3:24.35.
Wingate junior J.C. Suddeth and Mars Hill senior Markece Cunningham each took part in the shot put. Suddeth threw 43-2 1/2 to finish 22nd while Cunningham had a toss of 41-11 1/4 to place 26th.
Suddeth also set a personal record in the hammer throw with a toss of 132-10, placing 21st, and finished 34th in the discus with a throw of 117-3.
APPALACHIAN STATE TRACK: Sean Doyle competed Thursday and Friday in the Bill Webb & Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off in High Point.
Doyle placed 13th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:09.19 and 17th in the 800 with a time of 1:59.44. He also ran with the Mountaineer 4×400-meter relay team, which placed 8th with a time of 3:23.35.
LEES-MCRAE TRACK: Matthew Darden had a busy weekend at the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational at Lenoir-Rhyne, competing in three events.
Darden placed 11th in the long jump with a mark of 19-0, then added a 19th-place effort in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.45. Darden also ran the 200 meters in a time of 23.48 to place 15th.
