LANDRUM – Dropping a wrestling meet by four points after giving up 18 has to hurt, but Landrum head coach Josh Fowler hid it well.
After the Cardinals dropped a 39-35 meet to Whitmire at Landrum, the Cardinals came back to top Chapman, 44-30, on the second end of the tri-meet.
“Not bad giving up 18 points, and winning by 14,” Fowler remarked. His Cardinals are now 9-11 in dual meets.
Three forfeit losses in each meet left a bad taste in the opening loss, but added a bit of smile after the hosts had won their second and final meet of the night.
Against Chapman, the Cardinals got pins from Devon Keltner (145 pounds), Chris Easler (152), Austin Hutchins (after a reversal at 160), Jacob Ridings (170 pounds), Paul Zimmerman (195) and Jon Zimmerman (220). At 138 pounds, the Cardinals’ Wrenn Pierce, disassembled his opponent for a 17-2 technical fall.
Perhaps the match of the night occurred against Whitmire, where, at 132 pounds, Pierce, now 23-4 on the season, was matched against Alex Little. Nither man could score a takedown against the other, with the score tied at zero after two periods. In the third, Pierce managed an escape, giving him the only point he needed, to defeat Little, 1-0, and score three points for the Cards.
Against Whitmire, the Cardinals got pins from Paul Zimmerman (at 195 pounds; Jon was awarded a forfeit win at 220), J.T .Willingham (126 pounds), Ridings (in 12 seconds at 170). Hutchins added an 8-0 decision.
Today at 5 p.m., the regional tournament begins at Chesnee.
