Clark Phipps drilled a long 3-pointer in the final seconds to lift Polk County to a 66-64 win Thursday over Madison in the consolation bracket of the Knights Christmas Tournament in Hendersonville.
After the Patriots (2-9) scored to take a 64-63 lead, Polk freshman Qualon Sutton took the inbounds pass and drilled into the Madison frontcourt. From the left wing, Sutton passed to Phipps, who stood some three feet behind the 3-point line at the top of the key.
Phipps calmly launched his shot over a rushing Madison defender and hit nothing but net to snap the Wolverines’ five-game losing streak.
Polk County (2-8) will face conference rival Mitchell on Friday at 2 p.m. in the fifth place game in the tournament. Mitchell defeated Thomas Jefferson 70-52 on Thursday.
Phipps finished with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Polk County. Sutton added 16 points, six rebounds and four steals with Markell Lipscomb and Jaylon Bontrager each scoring eight.
