At approximately 1 p.m., the Tryon Fire Department was called in regards to a fire at White Oak. The staff had already begun evacuating occupants of the building, according to Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis.

Units first on scene reported a working fire that was being combatted at the time by White Oak personnel with the use of fire extinguishers, according to Davis. Fire departments were able to suppress the flames and remove smoke from the building, Davis said.

Tryon Fire was assisted by fire departments from Columbus, Saluda and Landrum, who all responded.

The cause of the fire was from a malfunction with one of the commercial dryers, Davis said. The laundry room at White Oak sustained some fire damage.

Polk County EMS also responded but there were no occupants of White Oak who needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 2:01 p.m.

“I commend the work of the staff of White Oak and administrator Mary Lance,” Davis said. “Her staff trained with us on what to do in such emergencies and their efforts today helped contain what could have been a much more significant fire.”
