Dante, reunited with his “mom”

Dante, reunited with his “mom”

I have often spoken of how proud I am of this community and the great strides that have been made since I first arrived. Many of my tales achieve success because of the fabulous support system I have available for my kids. More often than not, I play but a small role as I put into action some of the great programs and rescues who answer my call. Today’s tale is a perfect example of what teamwork can do.

Dante, a beautiful and friendly pit mix, was found strolling along the side of the road. Dante was wearing a tag with his name and phone number on it. As fate would have it, I knew the couple (from the American Legion) who picked him up. We have prayed together for her sick Boxer who has cancer, but that’s a tale for another day.

It was Thanksgiving and they couldn’t reach anyone with the phone number and couldn’t take Dante home. They finally reached someone they knew from the Humane Society and asked for my number, which they could not get. They finally reached Dana Mayer, who runs Po’Kitties and also works with Paws, Prayers and Promises out of Landrum.

Landrum Vet was contacted and the office was opened up to take on Dante for boarding until we found an owner with the three P’s offering to pay the bill.

I found out about Dante the next evening at the American Legion and promised my friends who found him that I’d look into it and do what I could to help Dante.

The next morning I went to Landrum Vet to meet Dante and let them know that I would handle Dante’s boarding until we found his owner. When I met Dante he was so friendly and handsome I knew that this boy was loved.

“He looks real healthy,” I said to the vet tech.

“Yes,” she answered. “He’s been well taken care of.”

“Don’t worry, big fella,” I said, turning toward Dante. “We’ll do all we can to get you back home.”

After I got Dante to calm down a bit, he received the customary kiss between the eyes from Uncle Lennie. I then went to the shelter and told them about Dante. I left them a description of the boy and told them he’s being boarded at Landrum Vet, in case his owner calls.

Over the weekend Dante’s number kept being dialed without any response. On Monday morning after dialysis I went to visit Dante again hoping for good news. I ran into my dear friend and board member Dana Mayer.

“I’ve come to check on Dante, Dana. Any word yet?”

“No, we tried again this morning. I’m going to take him around the area he was found tomorrow.”

“Alright Dana, that’s great. Meanwhile I’ll handle whatever he needs and his boarding.”

“I heard, Lennie, thank you.”

“Thank you, too, girlfriend.” I like embarrassing my good friend Dana, but it doesn’t work like it used to, she’s getting used to me.

Tuesday morning I was set to visit Dante and see what else I could do to help when the email came in. Dante’s owner had contacted FHS and she was told he’s being boarded at Landrum Vet under Uncle Lennie’s and 3P’s care. Along with the email was a wonderful photo of Dante sitting and looking up at his mom. I could sense the love between them and I immediately welled up with tears of gratitude for all involved to make this happen.

It’s amazing what can be done when people with the proper attitude work together. Thank you to my friends who stopped to pick up Dante. Thank you to the ladies from Paws, Prayers and Promises: Kelly, Yvonne and Dana. Thank you Landrum Vet, for giving sanctuary, even on a holiday. And thank you, Foothills Humane Society, for seeing that Dante’s owner knew where he was.

And as always, dear readers, thanks for listening.
