Lightning strike causes fire on Aurora Lane in Tryon

A home in Tryon was struck by lightning on Monday afternoon, July 11 that caused damage to the house and its gutters.

The Tryon Fire Department was called around 2:45 p.m. to 101 Aurora Lane.

Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis said the residence sustained a direct lightning strike at the rear of the house in a sunroom, causing damage to the house and guttering. Davis said it appears the lightning ran in through the guttering of the home.

The house sustained minor damage as a result of the fire, Davis said, which was mainly electrical damage, though some structural damage occurred as well.

The Tryon Fire Department was assisted by the Landrum Fire Department, the Columbus Fire Department and Saluda Fire Department as well as the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Tryon Police Department and the Polk County EMS. No one was injured.

The afternoon storms on Monday resulted in several other calls. Davis said during the same time period as the fire from the lightning strike, the Tryon Fire Department, Saluda Fire Department, Tryon Public Works department and the Tryon Police Department also responded to multiple trees down in the 600 block of Carolina Drive in Tryon.

Davis said the damage appears to be caused by straight-line winds.

Polk County was under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time of the calls. The area also had other thunderstorms with lightning later Monday evening with more in the forecast this week.
