Polk County’s varsity baseball team was within one strike of retiring visiting Hendersonville on Tuesday, May 3 in the sixth inning, with the Wolverines leading 5-4. Unfortunately, starting pitcher Tyler Harris was forced to leave the mound when his pitch count reached 92, and Hendersonville tacked on five runs in the sixth, adding four more in the seventh, to earn a 13-5 win. In these photos, taken in the sixth and seventh innings, Hendersonville scored while Polk catcher Sedrick Pickett heroically tried to defend the plate. Pickett leaped high to take a high throw from the outfield. He wheeled to tag this runner, who was called safe at home, though Pickett thought the runner missed the plate. Polk hit the ball well, and Harris mixed speeds effectively, but Hendersonville hit the ball hard later in the game. (Photos by Mark Schmerling)
