A woman who was arrested in December 2015 in connection with the abandonment of three dogs, one of which was found with a cord wrapped around and embedded in its leg, plead guilty on Wednesday, April 6 to misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to court records.

Sabrina Renee Painter, who was 38 at the time of her arrest, was sentenced to 10 days in jail, which was suspended for her to serve one year of unsupervised probation, pay a $25 fine and court costs, according to court records.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office received information on Dec. 28, 2015 about abandoned dogs at 812 Landrum Rd., Columbus, where officers found three dogs. One dog was extremely matted and the other, later named Snoozy, had a cord embedded in its leg, according to sheriff reports.

The sheriff’s office issued arrests warrants for Painter and she turned herself in on Jan. 7. Her original charges involved animal abandonment and cruelty to animals, but with the plea bargain all charges were dropped except one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

The sheriff’s office and community quickly rallied to save the dogs, particularly Snoozy, who required an expensive surgery to try to save her leg.

The dogs were removed from the property immediately in December and Snoozy was taken to Cloverfield Veterinarian Hospital. The dog had surgery in early January in an attempt to repair its leg from the damage, but the surgery did not work.

The community then began a fundraiser for Snoozy to be sent to a specialist to save her leg with estimated costs of $6,000. All the money was raised and Snoozy’s leg was saved. The surgery included plates and fusing and Snoozy was being cared for by a foster family.

The other dogs found on the property were a matted Sheepdog as well as a Dachshund mix, which was tied up.
