Tryon approves NPR station on tower
Tryon Town Council approved a five-year lease with WCQS out of Asheville for public radio to be broadcast in the Polk and Landrum area. Tryon signed a lease for WCQS public radio to place a signal and equipment at its communication building located on Tryon Peak. WCQS will pay the town $600 per year with council ensuring the town will have passwords to kill the signal in case of interference or an emergency. Equipment was scheduled to be installed this week. The station will be accessible at FM 88.1 once it goes live.
Tryon Mayor Pro-Tem Miller dispels rumor
During Tryon Town Council’s Tuesday, Oct. 20 meeting, commissioner and mayor pro-tem Roy Miller said he normally doesn’t address rumors but wants to dispel a rumor that he lives in Asheville. He said he still lives in Tryon.
Tryon reminds residents it’s fire prevention month
During Tryon’s Oct. 20 meeting, commissioner Roy Miller reminded residents it’s fire prevention month. The Tryon Fire Department has smoke detectors for free for residents and will install them at no charge to those in need. Fire extinguishers can also be refilled and tested by the Tryon Fire Department.
Polk recognizes emergency personnel for work during rains
The Polk County Board of Commissioners during its Oct. 19 meeting recognized Polk emergency personnel for its work during the recent rain events. Polk County Emergency Manager Bobby Arledge said many don’t realize the meetings and planning that personnel go through to prepare for events such as the recent predicted flooding. “We were prepared for it and had a lot of people out in this stuff,” Arledge said. Along with emergency personnel and local police and fire personnel and volunteers, Arledge recognized the staff of the Turner Shoals Dam, which staff lowered Lake Adger five feet to prepare for the rains. Arledge also encouraged residents to sign up for the county’s CodeRed alert, which can be accessed through the emergency management page at www.polknc.org.
Polk Commissioners approve amendment to Bright’s Creek development agreement
Polk County Commissioners approved an amendment to its development agreement with Bright’s Creek during the county’s Monday, Oct. 19 meeting. Bright’s Creek requested the amendment, which includes slowing down and adjusting Bright’s Creek’s schedule for development.
