The City of Landrum will be revamping its billboard design thanks to a joint effort made by the Landrum Area Business Association focus group, Mayor Bob Briggs and City Administrator Caitlin Martin.

The LABA focus group began billboard discussions in May.

The design will feature Martin’s “DiSCover” theme and stylization, the “Eats, Antiques and Boutiques” slogan provided by LABA president Sean Evans and a portrait of downtown as suggested by Briggs.

While the billboards are very similar, they employ different images of Landrum.

However, the similarities carry throughout the images as well, being street-level views of downtown.

The first portrait, provided by Michael Drumgool, was taken in the winter and will be placed on the billboard adjacent to the private Campobello airport at approximately mile marker four on Interstate 26.

Michael Drumgool’s portrait will be featured on Landrum’s newly relocated billboard that resides at mile marker three on Interstate 26. Drumgool specializes in real estate and equestrian photography in the Foothills region. His gallery can be viewed at www.inhiseyes.net.

The second, a photograph taken by Erik Olsen, will replace the design currently located north of Saluda, also along Interstate 26. It will be accompanied by a verbiage change to correctly direct motorists to downtown Landrum.

While both were taken at sunrise, Olsen’s lighter summertime shot provided a coloration and cloud cover difference in the sky, an aspect that Martin hopes will generate extra attention.

Erik Olsen, a Tryon based professional photographer and filmmaker, donated his shot of downtown Landrum for use on the billboard that will be located north of Saluda along Interstate 26. Olsen is known for his aerial portraits, which can be found at www.ErikOlsenPictures.com.

“It would be nice if they match so when people see them they recognize it and identify it as a brand,” said Martin.

“I think if they see the billboards coming and going they will notice it,” she added.

After deliberation in the August 11 work session, the council agreed to update the design of each billboard in order to employ both designs.

Carrying into the council chambers, the council voted and approved the designs.

“It’s a great photograph, and when you look at it you want to drive down that street and find that little town,” said Briggs to attendees.

Motorists can expect to see the changes very soon. Fairway, owner of the southern billboard, plans to complete the update by the end of August, according to Martin.

“I’m extremely excited for a new vision,” said LABA Vice President Linda Howard.
