Polk County High School senior Shelby Wells, who has been running track since eighth grade, says she always wanted to run track in college.
Now she will be, after signing her intention to run track for Louisburg College on a scholarship. Louisburg College is located in Louisburg, N.C.
Wells signed her intent on April 27, with her mom, Jennifer Allen by her side.
After running in the 800 meter and 4X800 events, Wells moved to the one mile (1,600 meter) run last year.
“The mile is definitely my favorite. I like the mile. The 800 is too quick for me,” she explained, relishing the slightly less intense pace of the mile run.
Polk head track coach Alan Peoples, himself a Louisburg alumnus, gave Wells’ name to that college’s track staff, who scouted and recruited her.
“Louisburg was the first one (college) that expressed interest,” she remarked, “and I really liked them, so I didn’t look elsewhere.”
At Louisburg, Wells plans to study psychology.
