When Polk County hosts Mountain Heritage in today’s (Friday’s) Western Highlands Conference football game, the Wolverines and Cougars will each enter the game with 4-2 records. Each team is 1-0 in conference play.
Last week, Polk whipped Madison, 41-14, in its first conference game, while the Cougars edged Hendersonville (Now 4-2, as well), 46-43.
What can Coach Jamie Thompson’s team, and Polk fans expect?
“They’re good up front,” Thompson said of Mountain Heritage. “They’re very efficient in what they do.
The Cougars have averaged some 36 points per game, and according to Thompson, have much the same team as last year. Their offense is a wing T, out of the shotgun formation, with lots of misdirection, said Thompson.
With the same records, the teams, at least on paper, might play a close game.
“It could be (close),” Thompson said, but he added,” As always, I expect us to win.”
It would be difficult to expect a repeat of last year’s matchup, when the Cougars took a 14-0 lead, before the Wolverines scored 53 unanswered points en route to an 80-36 win.
Some good news for the Wolverines is the expected return of Storm Wheeler for tonight’s game. Wheeler was taken out of last week’s game hurt.
On the other hand, running back Tyler Jackson will still be out with an injury. Everyone else is healthy.
Opening kickoff at Columbus is set for 7:30. Be prepared for thunderstorms.
